Research Interests

  • Dr Tewfik employs the new concept that combines tailored functional formulae hand-in-hand with standard pharmacological therapies (coined as “pharma-nutrition” or nutraceutical).
  • Her current nutraceutical research exploits the use of pharmacology and clinical nutrition in nutrition intervention programs that combat chronic diseases related to inflammation and immunity, allergy, cancer, cardiovascular and cognitive disorders.
  • Research techniques span over various laboratory scrutiny starts from authentication of botanicals; biochemical evaluation, antimicrobial testing, isolation/identification of “biologically active” components (in-vitro/in-vivo tissue systems) and quality control of natural products, supplements and product formulations up to randomised clinical studies.
  • With the ongoing advancement of Nanotechnolgy and its application in Nanomedicine, Dr Tewfik’s research portfolio has been enriched with the use of Nanomolecules in health and disease management.
  • With her team, Dr Tewfik is contributing to the future of pharmaceutics with advanced drug delivery systems (eg Solid Lipid Nanoparticles [SLN]) in nutraceutical product formulation.
  • This is a multi-disciplinary group with expertise in chemistry, phytochemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology and genetics, and is focussed on strategic areas of analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic applications in biomedical science.

    • Formulation and optimisation of solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) containing essential active nutrients with the aim of enhancing their efficacy in cell model of dementia.
    • Formulation and optimisation of solid lipid nanoparticles containing plant stanols/ sterols and to evaluate the effectiveness of pharmacovigilance programme in Nepal and the United Kingdom with a specific focus on statins.
